It can be disheartening. I have never broken even paying for ads and the last time I ran a sale I decided not to advertise, just using my mailing list, newsletter swaps, and social media. It was a $0.99 sale and I didn't have the reach that advertisers do but I made $20. Better than being $20 in the red.
